Many AutoCAD candidates can name every command and still produce drawings that fail quality assurance. What to test in the MCQ phase
The MCQ section should test the fundamentals that separate junior from senior. Trivia is a waste. Focus on the daily decisions that affect drawing quality.
- Layer management. What layer should this element be on? When do we lock layers? How do we manage layer visibility across sheets?
- Blocks and references. When do we use a block vs an xref? How do we manage block attributes? How do we handle nested blocks?
- Dimension styles. Why do we use dimension styles instead of overriding? How do we configure dimstyles for different drawing scales?
- Drawing setup. Plot styles, viewports, layout vs model space discipline, paper sizes.
- File management. Cleaning up drawings, audit, recover, purging unused elements.
- Plotting. Plot styles, line weights, output formats, batch plotting.
Avoid keyboard shortcut trivia — these are easily searched and not a hiring signal. Avoid AutoCAD history questions. Test what the candidate needs to do, not what they need to know about the tool's evolution.
What to test in the practical phase
The practical phase is the high-signal portion. Give the candidate a sketch (typically hand-drawn or a simple reference) and a brief, and ask them to produce a finished drawing within a fixed time.
The brief should specify:
- Drawing scale and paper size.
- Required views (plan, elevation, section as relevant).
- Standards basis (the candidate's brief should reference a standard, real or simulated).
- Required annotation (dimensions, notes, callouts).
- Title block requirements.
The candidate's output is graded on accuracy, standards compliance, layer discipline, presentation, and time efficiency. This is closer to the real job than any MCQ.
Red flags in the practical that surface immediately
Experienced CAD reviewers can spot weak candidates in the first 30 seconds of looking at a submission. Common red flags:
- Everything drawn on layer 0. The candidate either does not know layer discipline or chose to ignore it. Either way, supervised onboarding will be long.
- No dimension styles. Dimensions overridden inline mean the candidate does not understand the maintenance burden they are creating.
- Polylines used where lines suffice (or vice versa). Suggests the candidate does not understand the structural difference between AutoCAD primitives.
- Blocks exploded where they should be referenced. Suggests the candidate works around concepts they do not understand.
- Inconsistent line weights. Suggests no plot style discipline.
- Title block missing or incomplete. Either inattention to detail or unfamiliarity with production drawings.
These are not edge cases. They are the difference between a candidate who will be productive in week two and one who will need six months of supervision before they can be trusted with client work.
L1 vs L2 — the distinction that matters
AutoCAD roles split into two main levels in most engineering organisations.
L1 — Junior Draftsman. Works under supervision. Produces drawings from explicit briefs. Follows standards documented elsewhere. Limited decision-making authority. Expected to learn on the job.
L2 — Independent Producer. Works with minimal supervision. Interprets ambiguous briefs and asks the right clarifying questions. Knows the standards and can explain them. Trusted with client-facing work. Productive from week two.
The assessments should differ accordingly. L1 tests recall and basic discipline. L2 tests interpretation, standards judgement, and decision-making under ambiguity. The same software, different roles, different banks.

Trying to use AI tools to generate the drawing. Increasingly common. AI tools cannot produce production CAD drawings yet, but candidates may try. The proctoring catches tab switches; the output usually reveals the attempt.
Speed-over-quality. Candidates who finish the practical in 30 minutes often missed quality steps. Their output should be reviewed especially carefully for the red flags above.
