Revit Assessment Test for BIM and Architecture Hiring

Revit candidates often present like AutoCAD candidates with more screenshots. A Revit assessment test that grades Revit the way AutoCAD is graded — command recall and menu navigation — misses what actually matters. Revit is fundamentally a modelling tool: family creation, parametric thinking, view setup, coordination. The assessment should test the modelling discipline, not the menu.
What separates strong Revit candidates
The candidates who produce reliable Revit work share a set of habits that are not visible in CV claims or menu trivia. The assessment should target these habits directly.
- Family creation and parametric thinking. Strong Revit modellers think in parameters and constraints, not in static geometry. They build families that flex; weaker modellers build families that look right in one configuration and break in others.
- Shared coordinates and worksharing. Project setup discipline is invisible until it goes wrong, at which point it derails the whole team. Strong candidates understand the project coordinate system and the worksharing model deeply.
- View templates and presentation control. A view template applied across the project keeps the documentation consistent. Strong candidates use templates aggressively; weaker candidates override view settings ad hoc.
- Coordination with linked models. Architecture, structure, and MEP need to coordinate. The candidate's handling of linked models — coordinates, visibility, ownership — is a strong differentiator.
- Schedules and the relationship between model and documentation. Strong candidates understand that the schedule reads the model, so the model has to be clean. Weak candidates produce schedules through manual editing.
These are testable through a practical task. They are not testable through MCQs alone.
The practical task design
The Revit practical should give the candidate a brief and a time limit. The brief should require the candidate to model a small element from a sketch, set up the views, and produce a sheet for presentation. 60 minutes total.
What the rubric scores:
- Model integrity. Does the schedule read the model correctly? Does the model behave when a parameter changes?
- Family discipline. Are families created where needed? Are reference levels and parameters set up correctly?
- View setup. Are views set up with templates? Is annotation consistent?
- Sheet presentation. Is the sheet clean and ready for issue?
- Time efficiency. Did the candidate use Revit's strengths (modelling once, viewing many ways) rather than producing duplicate work?
What the rubric does not score: rendering quality. Renders are not a hiring signal for production Revit roles. Including render quality in the rubric over-weights a skill that does not predict production work.
What to ignore in the test
Several common Revit assessment elements are noise. Cut them.
Rendering quality. As noted — production modellers do not render. Visualisation is a different role.
Menu shortcut trivia. Searchable; not a hiring signal.
Naming Revit version-specific features. Tests memory of the changelog rather than ability.
Rendering setup for "presentation drawings." Same point as above. Documentation discipline is what production roles need.
Revit modeller vs BIM coordinator
These are different roles often confused in hiring. The Revit modeller's job is producing the model — geometry, parameters, families, views. The BIM coordinator's job is making the model work alongside other models — federation, clash detection, BCF reporting, discipline coordination.
The assessments should differ. A Revit modeller is tested on modelling discipline and view setup. A BIM coordinator is tested on coordination workflow — given a federated model with clashes, can they classify, document, and route them for resolution? Hiring one for the other role is the most common engineering hiring mistake.

Dynamo and computational design — for whom?
Dynamo (Revit's visual programming environment) is the computational design layer. For most production roles, Dynamo familiarity is nice-to-have but not essential. For senior Revit roles and computational designers, it is core.
If the role specifically demands Dynamo, test it explicitly with a small parametric exercise. If the role does not, do not test it — passing on Dynamo while failing modelling discipline does not make a good hire.
How to handle Revit version differences
Revit changes meaningfully across versions. Candidates familiar with 2018 may struggle with 2024 features. The assessment should target a specific version (usually the current version your firm uses) and accept that candidates from older environments may need ramp-up time on version-specific features.
Avoid version trivia questions — they age badly. Focus on modelling principles that survive version changes.
BIM execution plans and ISO 19650
Senior Revit and BIM candidates should understand the BIM execution plan framework and ISO 19650 at conceptual level. The test should cover the framework, not the clause numbers.
Useful test questions: "Explain what a Common Data Environment is and why it matters." "Describe the information requirements that flow from employer to supplier in a BIM project." Not useful: "Cite clause 4.2.3 of ISO 19650-1." The first tests understanding; the second tests memorisation.

Discipline-specific banks give stronger signal. The fundamentals are the same; the conventions and expected output differ enough that one-size-fits-all loses signal.
What about hiring Revit candidates from CAD-only backgrounds?
Possible but requires ramp-up time. Test for modelling thinking specifically — the leap from drawing to modelling is the leap candidates need to make.
